Rotary Knife Template

The Rotary Knife template creates a sequence in a typical application where material strips are cut from a long roll of material. The material is unwound at a constant linear speed, and the strips are cut using a rotary knife mounted on a rotating drum (also referred to as a cross cutter). There can be one ore more blades mounted on the drum.

The synchronous range is defined as the contact angle where the blade is in contact with the material. The cutting point occurs at the zero position. At this point the circumferential speed of the knife must be equal to the speed of the material line.

When the cut length equals the drum circumference (2 * PI * r), the drum rotates at a steady speed. In this case, the cut length is referred to as the 'synchronous' cut length.

r = Knife radius
a1 = Start contact angle (relative to cut position)
a2 = End contact angle (relative to cut position)
Contact angle, a = a1 + a2

The velocity profile is defined below in reference to the cut position.
